This is all your fault, you know

By Voxy

V oxy, you should write a blog! There should be a blog, Voxy! Yes, make a blog! I’d read a blog! Go on, Voxy!

To all of you, I say: pthbbbbbbt. Because of you all, I had to actually go through my stash of products and organize them and purge stuff and learn how to make a light tent and figure out how to use my digital camera better and buy and assemble a new storage unit (which I *so* don’t have space for in my bathroom, but hey, who needs a towel bar anyway?) and — well, lookie there, you know, that doesn’t look half bad.

So, uh, thanks for making me do that, I guess. It also helped me procrastinate grading, which is a laudable goal in itself.

Since the first time we talked about doing pictures of makeup stashes, mine unfortunately grew. So it was time for a reorganization anyway, since my previous system was barely containing things. My goal is always to have one container or tray that has the basic products on it that I use on a more-or-less daily basis, and store the other things somewhere else. When possible, I like to do my makeup in front of my balcony doors, which let in a lot of natural light, so ideally that container should be portable so I can take the whole thing out to the living room and then bring it back into the bathroom.

Below is the first stab at a new organizational system (and it’s already changed a bit since I took this photo on Sunday):

tray 1

On the shelf below this, which you can’t see, is a large dark blue lidded plastic box containing my skincare products (I try to keep them in closed boxes or otherwise away from light as much as possible) and another shallow box containing additional mineral eyeshadows and my collection of lipsticks. I’m still figuring out what the best way is to organize things, so I’ll probably make some changes to this general plan (for example, the concealers on the lazy susan have already been re-organized into a small round basket that I liberated from another purpose). Duplicates/backups of products are stored separately in the linen closet, where I also have a small box of products I wear very rarely but don’t want to get rid of. Product samples also live in a separate box, where I am convinced they have an aggressive breeding program going on.

Product roundup:

Pictured on the lazy susan:

• Cotton balls (I like Target brand best)

• Toner (Alba Hibiscus Toner in an Almay toner bottle. The Almay toner was OK but I like the Alba better — but the Almay bottle delivery system is great and keeps me from wasting or spilling product, so I just refill it with the Alba toner.)

• An almost-empty bottle of Wexler MMPI spray serum. I really like a spray serum and am trying to figure out how I can have another one when this is empty.

• A small bottle of Dermalogica eye makeup remover has been added since this photo was taken.

Concealers, from left to right:

• CG Smoothers stick concealer

• Make Up For Ever Lift Concealer (top left; white tube)

• Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer (top right; black tube)

• DuWop Circle Block (middle left)

• BeneFit Erase Paste (middle center)

• ID BareEscentuals BareMinerals concealer (middle right)

• Almay SmartShade concealer (bottom left)

• Smashbox Photo Op eye brightener sample (tiny beige tube, bottom right)

• Too Faced Shadow Insurance (far right, turquoise tube)

• Dr. Hauschka Cover Stick (far right, white tube)

Below: Smashbox Photo Finish primer (sample size), Elizabeth Arden Perpetual Moisture 24 cream (sample size; I use this for chapped lips sometimes rather than a balm. The fragrance is annoying but it seems to help my lips heal rather than just covering the rough spots with petrolatum)

On the makeup tray: (I’ll repost the photo at the bottom so you don’t have to keep scrolling up)

Top left compartment: Blushes

• Tarte cheek stain in True Love (sample size from Sephora sample set)

• BeneFit BeneTint cheek and lip stain

• Smashbox SoftLights facial luminizer in Prism (there’s another one in Tint hiding below)

• Almay SmartShade cream blushes in Natural and Pink

• various Jane mineral and powder blushes

• LORAC Tantalizer baked bronzer (sample size from Sephora sample set)

Top right compartment (actually several smaller compartments, but who’s counting?): primers, foundations, finishing powders, brushes

• Almay SmartShade foundation in Light

• Dr. Hauschka Bronzing Concentrate (you can only see the gold tip of the bottle)

• Voxy’s own blend of various mineral powder foundations in a BareEscentuals refillable travel brush container

• BDB Billion Dollar Brows brow-enhancing gel (this needs to be stored elsewhere)

• various and sundry brushes

• Dr. Brandt Pores No More pore refining primer

• Kabuki brush and blending container (for the mineral foundation)

• Make Up For Ever HD high definition finishing powder

• BareMinerals powder foundation in Light, SPF 15 (sample size for testing)

Bottom compartment: Eye stuff

• Mascara: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes (sample from Sephora sample kit, currently testing); Rimmel Glam Eyes mascara in Black

• Cover Girl clear brow/lash gel (I use this as a brow gel and it gradually picks up some of the brow powder color, which is why it’s now a pale brown)

• LA Splash liquid liners: Shipwreck Copper, Black, Purple Sponge. Underneath, where you can’t see, there are pencil eyeliners by Rimmel, Estee Lauder, ULTA, and others.

• Eyeshadows: top row: Urban Decay eyeshadow in Sin, Lorac eyeshadow in Serenity, Smashbox shadow/liner palette (all metallic gold/bronze shades), LA Splash body/face glitter in gold and copper. Middle left: ULTA eye shadow in Cocoa (my standard neutral “I’m-not-wearing-eyeshadow” eyeshadow, which is why you can see I’ve used it all the way down to the pan); middle right: ULTA eye shadow in some limited-edition coppery color that I can’t remember the name of, and ULTA and NARS green eye shadows. Bottom row: Too Faced eyeshadow in Dirt Bag, Bourjois Wet/Dry eyeshadow in Violet Absolu, various shades of rosy brown & purple ULTA eyeshadow, and another ULTA eyeshadow in a discontinued Chestnut shade that I use as a brow powder.

Lip products (including lipsticks, stains, balms, and glosses) are in a separate tray, along with more mineral eyeshadows in a variety of shades of brown, pink, purple, silver, and blue.

Well, I’m having fun with the blog, so I’m glad others think it’s starting off well too! Thank you for that (and for writing!)

I got rid of three Target bags’ worth of old skincare products: expired sunscreens, congealed lotions, maybe-I’ll-come-to-like-this-fragrance-someday body butters, etc. I also filled a bag with extra toothbrushes (I use a Sonicare toothbrush, so have a limited need for extra manual ones), soaps, and the small bottles of conditioner that come with home haircolor kits to take to a local women’s shelter.

    oooooooooooooooh, pretty.

i already spent $100 at ulta because of you, you wily vixen. (smashbox photo finish primer! new eyeshadow! new kabuki brush!) (also: haircut scissors for my kid; far less sexy.)

now you make me want to buy out sephora. sigh.

I hope you have a club card at ULTA! You’ll get a free something-or-other in a few months.

I will be eagerly waiting to hear about how you like the new products! (Especially the smashbox primer. That gets a lot of good press; I need to give it another go, I think, which is why I got out my sample size container.)

And, what eyeshadow did you get? Tell all.

Thursday is the VIB 20% off shopping event at Sephora and I cannot wait to go (I’m hoping for cupcakes and confetti, though there will probably be nothing of the sort). But I don’t know what to buy because I don’t really need anything! I will get the Urban Decay lip primer, I think, and I can always restock on staples like Clarisonic brush heads, but that’s hardly what I’d call thrilling.
