Open-Thread Thursday (with pie!) — Sales — Question of the Week

By Voxy

"Pies Open" Signs, Culver Lake Nursery (Branchville, NJ) by takomabibelot. Is it… yes, I think it is… Open Thread Thursday! And there’s pie! (OK, that part’s DIY.)

What? More sales? Mais oui, mes petits renards.

BeneFit: Buy the Celebutante holiday gift set for $34 and get free shipping with code CELEBKIT. But wait, there’s more! If you spend $35 on the site (yes, that’s $1 more than the Celebutante kit, which I’m sure is not coincidence), you also get a free full-size Miss Popularity highlighter. It doesn’t show up in the cart but sources say it automatically gets thrown in with your order. This product is usually $24.

Urban Decay: F&F sale through 11/20. Get 30% off (!) with checkout code FNFW1.

Spalook: Sale on Kinerase products: 30% off. (No coupon code needed; ends 11/16.)

This one just in! L’Occitane F&F sale through Sunday! Get 25% off your purchase with code FNFB.

For you healthy-hair-via-the-magic-of-plants ladies, Phyto F&F sale is supposed to start on Friday but I don’t know how much the discount is or if a promotion code is needed. I’ll update when/if I hear. UPDATE: the website is here; prices are 40-50% off with no coupon code needed!

Clarins tried to run a FB promotion this week, but it was a pretty massive FAIL due to their reward offer not actually showing up in people’s FB inboxes. By the time I got mine, it was too late to take part in their 20% off sale, which ended Wednesday at midnight, but there is also a link to a coupon for a free 20-minute skin time facial treatment plus 2 skincare samples at Macy’s counters. Clarins says they’re good through the end of the year, but the coupon itself says it’s “valid while supplies last.” I guess if the world ends, and we run out of time, there won’t be any more facial treatments. I’m annoyed with Clarins for the technology fail and how they handled it, so here is the coupon link:

Question of the week: Between the sales and the $1,000-an-oz. skincare products, I’m still thinking about money. So this week’s question: What beauty/skincare product do you want but just refuse to buy for the price?

Mine: Bobbi Brown’s Limited Edition Chrome Holiday Palette, which has lovely shades (see below), but I am not shelling out $75 for it. I just refuse.

Extra bonus question: What’s your favorite pie? I’m torn between strawberry and cherry. But then there’s Key lime… and chocolate… and coconut…

    Dear Foxy-Voxy,

I know this is off-topic, and several days late, but I’ve been sick with the Swine Flu, and I hope you will allow extra credit.

Here’s the thing, my foxalicious one: I love love love green eyeshadow. But green poses several problems.

    1. I can’t find the right shade(s)! The darker ones make me look like I’ve gotten into a bar brawl, and the lighter ones make me look like a space alien.

    2. If I use a green liner, and green shadow in the crease, what shade on earth could I possibly wear under the brow? I normally go with some form of irridescent pink-tone. But somehow, pink and green say Cyndi Lauper to me, and I just don’t think I can pull that off. In magazine ads, I see women with light yellow under the brow, but that just doesn’t go with my skin tone.

Help me, Foxy Voxy! What is a young, pale-skinned, green-loving grasshopper to do?

Grasshopper: I love love love green eyeshadow.

      Me too!

I actually think that green eye shadows (for us green-eyed girls) are best not used all over the lid or in the crease but just as a touch on the front of the upper lid in the middle of the eye. I think of it as an accent color rather than a whole lid color. So I’ll use a pale brown or bronze over the lid and a slightly darker shade in the crease, and a champagne or light taupe as a highlight shade, and then add a touch of green over the center of the eye. I use a green liner, but then go over it with brown just enough to make it not too space-alien-like.

Yes, a good green, like a good man, is hard to find. I have a few that I like, but I really need to be sure to use an eyeshadow primer to make them stay and be true to color. Otherwise the darker ones just turn gray-green and look nasty. Since I’m using it as an accent color only, I can go with a medium-toned shade in a slightly brighter color than I could if I were putting it over the whole eye.

I find mascara is also essential to carry this look off.

I have a green NARS shadow that is apparently not being produced anymore. I’m tempted by Urban Decay’s “graffiti” shade (remember, I’m going for an accent color). It’s almost exactly my eye color:

Oooh! I really like that Urban Decay bright green!

And I just bought a shimmering champagne shadow that I adore. Maybe it’s time to break out the green…

    1. I bet the Bobbi Brown is not as great in person. Stand strong. (Although I do like her brushes pretty well; Shu Uemura first, then MAC, then BB brushes.)

    2. Peach.

Also, 3: did you get the Fluidline? Do you like it?

      1. Yes, well, I am now adequately palette-d for the holiday season, I think!

      2. Oooh, I forgot about peach.

      3. It turns out that there isn’t a MAC store in the mall where I went to Sephora, and since I am about to go on a no-buy (see above, re: VIB party binge), it might be awhile. Or, you know, I might decide I just have to have it. (Are there MAC counters in Macy’s? There are, aren’t there? That would make it easier.)

Oh, don’t do *that*! Then what fun would it be? :)

Although, after my binge at Sephora yesterday during the VIB event (details upcoming), I think I need to go on a no-buy, with the exception of using gift certificates and reward points I already have that expire at the end of Nov. or Dec.
