Open-Thread Thursday — Sales — Question of the Week

By Voxy

Tråd by Gullig.Thursday. A week and a half of classes left. You. Can. Do. It.

News Tidbit of the Day: Apparently the whole Peruvian “Will Kill For Fat” business might have been a hoax.

Other News Tidbit: Parabens might not be the soul-crushing evil we all thought they were. Sorry about that, parabens. Have a cookie. No hard feelings?

New since last post:

Lancome: Lancome is having a “Seven Days of Lancome Luxury” event. Every day there’s a different bonus gift or sample, plus free shipping with any $35 purchase. Through 12/7.

Clinique: Clinique is doing Lancome one better — well, three better, actually — by running a similar program for an additional three days. Their “Ten Days of Happiness” (mmm, sounds like Chinese food) includes a free deluxe sample or gift with purchase and free shipping with a $40 purchase. Through 12/11.

Coming Up:

Uh, at the moment, I got nothin’. Will update if info comes in.

Previously announced sales still going on:

MAC: still free shipping, through 12/13 15% off any purchase through 12/14; use code DAILYMAKEOVER. • Tarte: 25% off through 12/31 with code ECOSCENE25 • Too Faced: 30% off through 12/31 with code LUCKYBREAKS

Question of the Week:

Because we’re all brain-dead at this time of year, this week’s question is fill-in-the-blank. (I couldn’t figure out how to get Scantron forms onto the blog.) Actually, it’s not so much a question as a statement.

Fill in the blank:

Although I am happy to buy ______ at the drugstore, I always go high-end for ________.

Mine: pencil eyeliner/moisturizer.

Nail polishes I current favor are Rescue Beauty Lounge, Chanel, and Jessica Nail Salon (not sure where to categorize Jessica; price point is in-between drugstore and high-end).

Hey, there’s a one-day (actually, a five-hour) sale going on on Rescue Beauty nail polishes tomorrow (Tuesday 12/15) — between 12 noon and 5 pm use code “VIP 5 HOUR” for 50% off.

(In the ad, the code is written with spaces between the words, but I don’t know if those are necessary or not.)

Although I am happy to buy eyeliner at the drugstore, I always go high-end for concealer and foundation.

My skin is too fair and too sensitive to use crappy powder or concealer. If I use something low-end it looks like I’ve been painting on my face or something. It’s just worthwhile to splurge on those products.

But I’ll totally use 99-cent eyeliner.

Me too on the eyeliner. Unless there’s some fabulous color from some high-end brand at Sephora that I just can’t live without, Rimmel and Prestige are just fine by me.

Although I am happy to buy nail polish and mascara at the drugstore, I always go for high-end skin care products.

I know a lot of people love Olay, but everything I’ve used of theirs feels waxy on my skin. Drugstore stuff just doesn’t work for me. But I’m not totally loving the Murad set I got from Sephora, either, and I’m torn about whether to try Ole Henriksen when I’m done, or just go back to Kiehl’s. Or my previous great love, Clarins.

What kind of products are you looking for? I can comb through my sample collection at home and see if there’s anything I can send you.

Oh, just the basics: eye cream, day moisturizer with sunscreen, night cream. Bonus points for toner or a good anti-aging serum (although that’s kind of a case of delayed barn door shutting…). But the Murad, which I really liked at first, now seems to be drying out my skin instead of moisturizing. Not really what I was going for, you know?

Although I am happy to buy Swisspers cotton balls, Cetaphil cleanser, and Lubriderm with cocoa and shea butters at the drugstore, I always go high-end for night cream, nail polish, and Laura Mercier makeup.

So the high-end nail polish makes a difference, huh? Hmm. I only ever paint my toes; wonder if I should upgrade. What brands do you recommend?
