Open-Thread Thursday — Sales — Question of the Week

By Voxy

Free to fly! by fspugna.<– The end of the semester is so close, I can smell it. This will be me in just a few endlessly long short days. Well, minus the ocean.

This week’s open thread has plenty of room for your end-of-semester, holiday-related, or just completely random whines, moans, gripes, groans, screams of frustration, or exultant whooping. Pull up a martini and stick around.

Hey, look! Sales!

New since last post:

This one comes in thanks to Wormold! Erno Laszlo: free shipping on any order (continental US only, sorry!).

Borba: 20% off through 12/18; free shipping with $50 purchase. Code: HAPPYHOLIDAYS.

Tarte: 40% off sitewide through 12/13; free shipping with $40 purchase. Code: FFDEC.

Lancome: Not a sale per se, but free shipping on every purchase with an extremely nice free GWP (gift with purchase). No code required, so you can combine this offer with one that does require a code, like the codes from their Seven Days of Whatever-It-Was, which they are still honoring while supplies last. (The codes and info are on the website.) I normally don’t promote GWP’s, but this is a particularly nice one and since it’s something you get for free and with free shipping to boot with no minimum purchase, it seemed worthy of a mention. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! Updated Thursday 2 pm: if you spend $50 at Lancome, you can use code HOLIDAYTREATS at checkout to get the above GWP and a second GWP containing eyeshadows, mascara, and skincare samples. Check out the website for details.

Caudalie: Today only! 20% off plus free shipping on any purchase. Use code HOLLY09. (I’m seriously considering getting some more of that serum I like.) [Updated to add: while most of the sales codes are not case-sensitive, this one is. You must type HOLLY09; Holly09 or anything like that will not work.]

DDF Skincare: 25% off, plus free shipping and samples, through 12/24. Use code DDFHOLIDAY.

Previously announced sales still going on:

MAC: still free shipping, through 12/13, no code required — but entering code GIFTABLE09 will also score you a free MAC gift bag 15% off any purchase through 12/14; use code DAILYMAKEOVER. • NARS: 22% off orders of $60 or more through 12/16; use code 3312299CP; or free shipping with any purchase through 12/31; use code 120109 • Stila: 20% off through 12/18; free shipping with $50 purchase; code TWITTERBFF • Tarte: 25% off through 12/31 with code ECOSCENE25 • Too Faced: 30% off through 12/31 with code LUCKYBREAKS

Question of the Week:

So I had this really great Q of the W, and it was so great that I knew I would remember it and therefore didn’t need to write it down.

Yes, well.

I therefore present you with this perfectly serviceable, but not nearly as good as what I had in mind, Question of the Week.

What has been your best/worst experience with an in-store makeover (or otherwise getting worked on by a sales associate)?

(I’ll add mine later, as I’m running off to teach.)

Worst, and only, makeover: my hair stylist wanted to use my photo for a promotion for a hair show. But I was, apparently, under-made for a photo. So she “made” me “better.”

It wasn’t great. She used WAY more eyeshadow (green and yellow) than I normally wear, and globs of mascara, which looks odd on someone with glasses like mine. My skin looked like it had been coloured in with a crayola crayon. And my lips… well, let’s just say that I don’t think any woman’s lips are naturally that orange.

    But my hair looked fantastic!

When I voiced concern over the amount of makeup she’d used, she told me to watch the reactions I got walking down the street. She was right. I did get reactions. But they were mostly of the averted-eye variety.

Hair show photography is always bizarre. I love looking at the magazines at the hairdresser’s just because they’re so out there.

But … green, and yellow, and orange? You are not a papaya.

Voxy, one to add to the sales (sort of): free shipping at Erno Laszlo. Since their shipping is really overpriced, and it is hard to find at stores, I was happy about this one. Time to replenish the good soap!

Best: either by the Guerlain rep at Neiman-Marcus or the Laura Mercier rep at Saks fifth Ave (main NYC store). When I asked for natural and professional, that’s the look I got (and yes, I bought from them).
Worst: Years ago a Chanel rep in California picked really garish colors for me, even after I said I don’t wear bright lipstick or eye shadow shades. My husband almost fainted when he saw me.
