Here is an article from the Japanese newspaper The Daily Yomiuri Online which discusses today’s voyage of the shuttle Discovery, which will be taking equipment up to the International Space Station, and especially the duties of Japanese astronaut Naoko Yamazaki.

The article, which is ironically entitled ” ‘No gender difference’ in space / Loadmaster Naoko Yamazaki ready for maiden mission aboard Discovery,” spends a few lines talking about the business of the mission, before continuing on to say:

“In addition to her primary mission, Yamazaki has other things to keep in mind.

As space activities are shown for all the world to see via the Internet and other media, many female astronauts still make a point of putting on makeup.

They are allowed to carry aboard the shuttle such cosmetics as makeup foundation, lipstick and eye shadow if their ingredients are judged safe by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Powdery items and products containing flammable liquid cannot be brought on the shuttle.

When another Japanese female astronaut, Chiaki Mukai, made space flights in 1994 and 1998, she selected cosmetics from a list NASA made in advance after examining their safety, according to JAXA.

Currently, female astronauts can choose their preferred cosmetics before the makeup undergoes NASA safety examinations, meaning the degree of freedom has been relatively enhanced, JAXA said.”

No gender difference in space, but evidently Yamazaki is expected to wear lipstick. Not only that, but that’s apparently a fact worth mentioning.

Rumors are flying that an Urban Decay F&F sale is imminent! The number being bandied about is 30% off, and the hoped-for date is Tuesday, 4/6. I’ve heard no official confirmation and received no official codes, but you can bet your sweet space-age patootie I’ll be updating if something comes in. UPDATE! Yes, it’s on. 30% off with code 1SFNF.

HauteLook has Kevyn Aucoin beauty today, Fusion Beauty on Wednesday, and Pixi on Thursday. All sales begin at 11 am Eastern/8 am Pacific.

And, don’t forget about the upcoming Sephora Beauty Insiders sale (15% off), starting one week from today. Online code: BI15. If you are a BI, you should also be getting something in the mail about it. I haven’t gotten mine yet but for some reason I’m always one of the last to get things in the mail. ANOTHER UPDATE! If you are a VIB, you get early access to the savings! The discount is the same, but you have access starting on Thursday 4/8 rather than having to wait until Monday 4/12. The early-access VIB code is VIBMADNESS (but you do actually have to be a VIB in order for this to work).

A whole week til the Sephora sale!?!?!

    That’s nuts.
Will the discount apply to clearance or on sale items?

Went to ULTA today. It’s just not Sephora. I tried on 18 lipglosses and left without a single purchase. That would never have happened with Sephora.
I tried the Stila lipgloss. I think it was not quite right as you mentioned.

I was afraid to try the stain as it looked pretty grody. The makeup testers in that place are actually pretty scary. I think dogs lick them at night. yuck.

Well, I have seen some pretty nasty looking testers at Sephora too. Yes, ULTA is not Sephora — which, on the other hand, is what makes it interesting. I don’t rely on it for the majority of my high-end shopping (and the prices on drugstore items are too high for regular shopping there) but the coupons are good and the whole drugstore tester thing can’t be beat. (Caveat: I never test store products on my actual lips, so I’m less concerned with the hygiene of that. If they have rubbing alcohol there, you can dip a lipstick in that to sanitize it; dry with a paper towel.)
