Sunless Tanning Study Reveals People Are Depressingly Stupid

fail-owned-mississippi-literacy-fail by kjarrett. As seen on The Beauty Brains blog:

Sunless Tanning Will NOT Provide Protection from UV damage.

The authors of a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, are urging the FDA to require sunless tanning products to contain chemicals that effectively block UV. Currently, there is no such requirement and that may be causing some confusion with consumers.

In this survey based study authored by Katie Brooks et. al. of Boston University School of Medicine, it was found that one third of all people believed that a sunless tanner was protecting them from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Unfortunately, they don’t.

This is not an issue of the lack of a UV requirement “causing some confusion with consumers.” It is an issue of “consumers not bothering to educate themselves about ingredients and then making random assumptions that (while convenient for them) are erroneous, and then getting pissy and likely threatening lawsuits if they develop skin cancer when it was THEIR FAULT IN THE FIRST PLACE.” There is no confusion if you are a responsible consumer. If you are not a responsible consumer, I haven’t got much sympathy.

Now think of the devastating effect that would have on the combination laundromat/tanning-salon industry!
