Open Thread Thursday: End-of-Year Splurges, You Won’t Believe What They’re Doing at Weather.com, Sales

By Voxy

Finish Line by jayneandd.Oh! So! Close! to the end of the school year. At this point I am crawling tortuously (yet glamorously) towards the finish line. I am not sweating, of course, because that would be unglamorous, but it would be fair to say that I am dripping with glow. In fact, I think “Blood, Glow, and Tears” would be a very good way to describe it. And don’t we all deserve an end-of-school treat for being such hard little worker bees? Yes, I think we do. I celebrated (albeit a little prematurely) by buying two sample-size containers of Creme de la Mer off eBay. I can’t really afford to plop down $100+ for the full-size container, but these were an affordable splurge.

From the “Every Day We Get A Little Closer To Idiocracy” department: Weather.com is now offering (I cringe to even type it) a “Daily Beauty Forecast,” in which they not only give you the temperature and forecast (which is, presumably, why you went there), but also a “check list” of beauty items you might need to cope with the vagaries of whatever weather is coming your way. Here is Wednesday night’s Beauty Forecast for NYC:

Oh my God — I didn’t bring a scarf! I need a scarf! Weather.com says I need a scarf! It’s on the checklist and I don’t have one! But wait — is that a woolly winter scarf or a pashmina or a Pucci scarf that we’re talking about? And the lip balm — should it be tinted? Scented? Flavored? HOW CAN I MAKE A DECISION BY MYSELF!?!?!?!!?!?

Sorry. Got a little carried away there.

Let’s talk about Sales!

Er…

Right then. Nothing much new. The Hourglass sale is still going on, and will be through the 31st, so you’re probably sick of hearing me mention that. (In case you’re not, 35% off with code LUCKYBREAKS2.) The Shu Uemura sale is going on through Friday (20% off of $50 and up, plus free shipping; code HAPPY).

That’s about it for the kind of sales I usually bring you here; as usual, I’ll update if something rolls into my inbox.

Yes, people have reported that those shades tend to run a little light. I would go back and exchange it for Medium. I don’t use that one myself (I use the Mineralize Skinfinish in the cream version) — is it drying?

A little bit, but not much. Although I’ve only been at it 2 days. APPARENTLY it’s more of a finishing powder than a foundation substitute (although I used it as such over just tinted moisturizer yesterday and it was less ghostly and pretty OK like that.) I like the MUFE HD better, though.

I recently bought some Sigma brushes including the dupe for the MAC 188 and you might want to give them a try. Almost-as-good quality for about 1/5 the price. I haven’t reviewed them yet, but I’m quite happy with what I’ve used so far.
I am so fond of those Stila convertible colors! Agreed that the Gerbera is very nice.
The only MUFE concealer I’ve used is the Lift Concealer, which is OK but never knocks my socks off. What’s in this one? Is it all creams? And yeah, MUFE HD powder is pretty much awesome in a jar. I did buy the Coastal Scents silica powder to use when I run out of MUFE, just for cost reasons, but my MUFE should still last me awhile yet.

I LOVE the convertible colors too – I already had the one that’s BRIGHT pink, the BRIGHT orange, and the dark wine-red one (these are all discontinued, I’m sure, but I’ve used them with brushes and they’re all still fine. Hush!) And the packaging is just perfect!!

I didn’t know they’d let you return/exchange makeup? I totally will, then. And I’ll definitely look out for the Sigmas – I’ve eyed them before, and I really do like the flat-top skunks for all kinds of things.

Re: returning/exchanging makeup — at MAC you will definitely need the receipt, and if you still have the box, so much the better. You should just need the receipt, but some places are particularly retentive.

PS, the MSF is “light medium” if anybody wants to trade. I look a bit ghosty with only that buffed over primer (and on top of concealer over the red t-zone.) I had to stipple a little bit of regular foundation over top today to not look weird, and who the hell wants to do that?

I’m glad it’s end-of-year splurge time. It retroactively validates yesterday.

Mac Mineralize Skinfinish: the counter girl gave me a half-shade too light, and I’m not sure I’m putting it on right. It is supposed to be a mineral foundation, with the buffing that implies, right?
    Mac Fix+. Yes, pleased.
NEW Mac brush – it’s actually a SE that’s not out yet specifically for cream blushes and bronzer; I was there for a 188, but they were out, and the manager let her sell me this one (131?) instead. Yes, pleased. Great for cream blush.

    Sephora:
Stila convertible color in gerbera – perfect natural cheek color for me.
Small tube of Smashbox photo finish primer in green (for color correction): haven’t tried it yet.
MUFE concealer palette: agh! I was all psyched about this, but I don’t think I love it! And it was like $40! But maybe I just haven’t figured out how to “leverage” (ugh, sorry) it yet?
MUFE HD powder: LOVE this. And I lay this purchase entirely at your neatly pedicured feet, by the way.

$240 total. Damn. I’m not going back to the mall for a LONG time.

What! No UV index? That’s beauty news we all can use.

I know; how easy would it have been to put that on there? — and how much more useful.

The two things I need are UV index and humidity (for my hair), and it has neither. FAIL.
