Monday Mix: Phragrance Phun on the iPhone; Sales

By Voxy

When I first got my iPhone, I was amazed at the number of applications that there were for the thing. This was before I realized that most of them were sheer dreck, written by people who a) have nothing better to do with their time than write applications that produce, for example, a variety of fart sounds and a fart-classification system, and 2) are evidently of an intellectual and emotional level at which fart sounds are funny.

However. Every once in awhile I come across a really cool app that is useful, interesting, and/or entertaining for the over-8th-grade-mentality crowd, and at the moment I’m enjoying playing around with Givaudan’s iPerfumer, an app that allows you to rate your preferences for certain types of scents (citrus, chypre, floral, fougere, oriental, and woody) and then suggests fragrances that you might like. It’s like having a perfume database in your pocket. You can also add fragrances that you’ve bought recently and rate them to improve the quality of your recommendations, and you can see new releases and which fragrances are most highly rated by other users. It doesn’t go into a huge amount of detail (for example, it doesn’t list the actual notes of anything), but if you were in Sephora and wanted to have a general idea of what you might try, it would be a useful tool. As you sniff and rate fragrances, theoretically your recommendations should improve.
