Monday Mix: Back-to-School Consolation Prizes? Also, Sales

By Voxy

I can’t deny it any longer, much as I’d like to – it’s back-to-school time. Anyone picking themselves up a cosmetics/skincare consolation prize to make the transition a little easier? A new concealer for that 8 am class? New nail polish to appreciate while you’re writing comments on student papers?

Personally, after my recent binge, I am not allowed to do any serious shopping for quite some time, so I’ll rely on living vicariously through your stories. But I have a mess of new products to be playing around with, so that should cushion the rude crash of the fall semester falling on my head.

Sales!

It seems to be skincare week over at HauteLook — they have Organicare Skincare on Monday 8/16, Kate Somerville on Tuesday 8/17 (so if you’re interested in Exfolikate or any of her other products, this might be a good time to check them out), Actifirm Skincare on Wednesday 8/18, Moy Skincare on Thursday 8/19, and Dr. Schwab Skincare on Friday 8/20. All sales begin at 11 am Eastern/8 am Pacific.

A reminder that Stila‘s sale is still running on their website through 8/31 with code DERBYDOLLS: 20% off, free shipping over $50. (FYI, if you’re lemming their new Custom Color Blush, another product that supposedly reacts to your skin’s pH to create “your perfect pink,” I swatched it in-store and it ain’t all that. It’s a very pretty pale and cool pink, but it’s not going to change to a deep magenta on your skin or anything. It’s going to be a pale and cool pink. That being said, if you need a cool pale pink blush, go for it.)

    Would you like a list?

(this is from multiple Sephora visits, I didn’t buy all this at once. Really.)

-Aqua Creams, shade #19 and #21. You all know what I think of these. I’m probably going to use them to fill in the hole in my wall that I caused when trying to open a bottle of wine with a shoe. They’re the right consistency for that purpose at least.

    – Tarte CustomEYES color-coordinated eye kit in brown. This includes EmphasEYES eyeliner; Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara, and ‘Here’s Lookin’ At You’ eyeshadow. (I actually only intended on buying the eyeliner, but at $29, the kit seemed to be good value)

-Bare Minerals ‘Face Fashion’, containing Light Show eyeshadow, Smoky Violet eyeshadow, mini Big and Bright eyeliner in teal, mini lipgloss in plumtini, and haute pink blush. This comes with a lot of unnecessary packaging.

-Tarte TEN Natural Cheek Stain (Limited edition).

-LORAC Private Affair palette. This comes with a mini ‘Behind The Scenes’ primer and brush in a little drawer underneath the eyeshadow palette, which actually makes the thing annoyingly bulky to carry around. The eyeshadow shades are: creamy beige with pearl, champagne rose with shimmer, soft taupe with pearl, platinum grey with pearl, deep wine with shimmer and black with sparkle. The creamy beige is a little light on me, but I really like the rest of the shades.

-Too Faced ‘Liquif-eye’, which apparently transforms eyeshadow into eyeliner. I haven’t used it yet and am not entirely convinced it will work but I liked the idea of it so bought it anyway.

-Illamasqua Liquid Metal in ‘Phenomena’ (what can I say–its sparkly!)

-OPI Nail colour in ‘Set The Mood’, which is a sort of pinkish purple shade.

    -Guerlain Rouge-G in Geisha

    -Lancome L’Absolu Rouge shade 131.

-Kat Von D ‘Sinner’ eau de parfum rollerball

-Urban Decay Naked Palette. Yes, I *finally* got one this evening! They were not on display in the store, but I asked an assistant if they had any, and she brought one out for me. Yay!!! I love it already, though I do blame it for all of the above purchases. If I’d picked up an UD Naked palette at the first Sephora I went to, I probably would not have ended up buying so much…

Oh! That is the other LORAC palette I want for the fall.

Geisha will look really good on you, I think, and you know what a fan I am of the Tarte cheek stains. I almost bought that one myself and resisted only because I convinced myself I had other similar products. That’s a really nice shade.

I didn’t have much luck with the Too Faced Liquif-Eye — there’s a review here from several months ago if you’re curious.

That is a really good value for the Tarte eye kit!

The LORAC palette is really nice, and I think all of the shades would look great on you. They seem to be selling out pretty fast at the moment–I got the last one at the store I got mine at, and there were none left in the other two (not that I’m trying to encourage you to go to a Sephora for one now or anything. I wouldn’t do a thing like that ;))

Liquif-Eye worked nicely with UD Half Baked this morning, though I’m not convinced it’s going to last (or whether gold eyeliner is really a good look). I tried to take pictures of the results of my experimenting with the UD palette but it is impossible to get the lighting right!

I’m impressed with the Tarte Lights, Camera Lashes! mascara. I wasn’t going to use it until my current mascara had run out/gone to gloopy to use, but I actually *really* hate the current mascara (Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes) so decided to ditch it for this one and am very pleased to have done so. It curls my eyelashes enough that I don’t need to use an eyelash curler, and actually does make them look longer. I am always sceptical of these products which claim to give the ‘false eyelash effect’, but for me, this one really does it. It might be a little too much for everyday use, though.

Dang you. You know what you made me do, don’t you? Don’t pretend to be innocent.

I have a tester of the Givenchy mascara and was going to try it today but ended up not. Are you saying I shouldn’t bother?

            Who, me? I didn’t do anything! ;)

The Givenchy mascara isn’t bad as a mascara, it’s the applicator I hate. If you can use the applicator then it might work out ok for you, but I cannot, and frequently stab myself in the eye with it because it’s so awkward to work with.

I went to ORIGINS to buy some more “Modern Friction” and left with two more cleaning products and a bunch of samples. The ORIGINS sales clerks are always so nice I end up buying much more than I planned.
