Monday Mix: Poltergeists, Breakage, and Sales

By Voxy

A poltergeist, I has one.

It appears to be a very special poltergeist, one that operates almost exclusively within the two bathrooms in my apartment. Why it is attracted to bathrooms, I have no idea. I’ve had a few weird incidences: a mysteriously shattering porcelain dish I’d intended to use as a mineral powder mixing pan, a box of haircolor getting itself out from underneath the sink and appearing on top of the counter, and a few other things. Yes, I have cats, but no, they couldn’t have done these particular things.

On Saturday night, I was leaving my bathroom in preparation for going out to dinner when the shelf I’d installed a few feet over the towel bar, and which held a box of CDs and a basket of skincare products, spontaneously hurled itself off the wall, narrowly missing me and sending all of its contents crashing to the floor. Fortunately, not only did it miss me, but only one product suffered damage: the lid to a jar of skin cream fractured into pieces. I have yet to figure out what I’m going to do with the cream; the jar itself is not cracked or broken and the little plastic … er, thingy … that fits over the mouth of the jar like an inner lid is still intact, so the product is not exposed to air, or at least not very much, but I should probably come up with a long-term solution.

Hopefully you are not in a position to sympathize with having a poltergeist, but I imagine that most of us at one time or another have suffered through the breakage of a prized cosmetics or skincare item. Share your tales of woe: what makeup or skincare items have you lost due to tragic breakage?

You are still having problems in those bathrooms?! Was the shelf even loose?

I’ve dropped an almost full container of loose powder, and the thing that is supposed to keep it from coming out fell out of the container. Loose powder is very difficult to remove from carpets…

Nope, not to my knowledge. And it wasn’t even *close* to the advertised weight limit. AND I did not jiggle it or whack it or put something on it or take anything off it before it fell. It just … fell. Or, as I like to think of it, jumped.

Fortunately the Parents Principalis were visiting, and Dad earned his Man Credits by hustling to Home Depot and buying braces for the shelf and re-mounting it in a way that would require a team of Canadian Mounties on horses to pull it down now.

What else would a Canadian Mountie be on, exactly? (Sorry, I couldn’t resist!)

If that comes back down now, then you’ve got a poltergeist for sure.

They could be on their own two feet (each), of course!
