Thursday Tossup: Being a Regular; Sales

Do you like to be a regular?

(No, I did not say “do you like to be irregular?” — if you do, I think that Jamie Lee Curtis has a yogurt for you.)

Do you like to be known and recognized at your local Sephora or ULTA or other makeup store/counter?

I walked into ULTA today and saw the same saleswoman I talked to this past Sunday about a particular product. I am not big on being recognized in that way in commercial establishments — so as soon as someone says they have seen me there before or they remember me, I’m liable to stop ever going to that particular place again. Case in point: there is a Qdoba that is a very convenient stop between work and home, and I’m there a few times a month. The other day, when I made my usual order of a chicken burrito “but I need the plain rice that hasn’t had the cilantro mixed in it yet,” the young man behind the tortilla steamer said, “oh, you’re the one.”

Of course I can never go there again now.

Anyway, the ULTA woman walked over to “help” me, recognized me, and said, “I know you’ve shopped here before, but just let me know if you need any help.” I find this embarrassing for some reason. It’s probably my tiny touch of Avoidant Personality Disorder. I would rather just be Anonymous Unrecognizable Shopper #283756, thank you very much.

At the same time, there are probably benefits to being “in” with the locals. Could I get special deals? Hmm. I think one of the other things that bothers me is that if I develop an acquaintanceship with a sales associate I will feel pressured to buy stuff every time they’re in the store when I come in.

On an unrelated subject, I hear from my local Sephora sales associate that in the near future there may be a 1,000 point Beauty Insider perk package (to add to the 100-point and 500-point ones they already offer). So if you are like me and hoard your Beauty Bank points, there may be a new level of fabulosity coming to a Sephora store near you. Or, of course, online.

Sales!

Not much new in the regular sales department. If you live in NYC, beauty brands and retailers are tripping over themselves trying to get your business for September 10th’s Fashion’s Night Out, which basically seems like Halloween trick-or-treating for beauty products. Those of us in the rest of the world merely get to watch from afar.

In a gesture that to this particular audience probably seems to just ooze irony, Bliss is offering 20% off all services to college students, because reading their syllabi and turning in their papers on time is evidently so stressful that they need to relax with a “fabulous facial,” a “must-have mani/pedi,” or a “painless-as-possible wax.” You have to show a college ID. No word on whether faculty IDs count, but I’d love to see us take over the spa world for a day. You can book through their website.

NARS is offering their usual 18% off (I’m sure there’s some reason why it’s 18%) on purchases of $60 or more through 9/18 with code 099CP0410.

Juara skincare is offering 10% off through 9/30 with code SEPT10.

Photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aussiegall/4906923871/ and I really want that mask now.

Thursday Tossup: Sorry, Work Ate My Life; Sales

Sorry I have been in absentia. The start of the school year always swallows way more time than I think it will.

I will be putting together a few looks using plum to help address A Biologist’s question and those should be up in a few days.

Quickie Sales!

HauteLook has Becca cosmetics today starting at the unusual hour of 4 pm Eastern/1 pm Pacific.

Becca is also running a sale of their own: 25% off with code DC0810 (ending date unknown; it may have expired since we are no longer in 8/10 so be careful).

ULTA is offering 20% off online with code 48173 through 9/4.

Monday Mix: I Have A Huge Girl-Crush On Christina Hendricks; Sales

Oh, come on, like that’s any news. Seriously, she is just gorgeous. This photo (via celebutopia.net) is of Christina at the Emmys last night. It makes me want to go back to being a redhead. (As a devout fan of Mad Men, I’m so disappointed that neither she nor Elizabeth Moss took home the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.)

As seen below, Christina is also the new face of London Fog, and it’s the sexiest raincoats have looked since, well, ever. No, seriously. It makes me want to wear a raincoat. And be a redhead. A raincoat-wearing redhead.

Sales!

Unofficial skincare sales week continues: HauteLook has DermaNew skincare on Monday, Sonya Dakar skincare on Wednesday, and Ecoskin on Thursday. Gilt has DDF Skincare on Tuesday.

Previously announced sales still in progress:

Boscia is offering 20% off through 9/1 with code THANKYOU • Stila is offering 20% off through 8/31 with code DERBYDOLLS • SkinStore is offering 20% off most brands (their usual exclusions apply) through 9/7 with code SUN20

Thursday Tossup: Er, Don’t Look Now, But It’s the Holidays Already; Sales

I’m not sure what percentage of this is cloud and what percentage is silver lining.

Promotional materials for Holiday 2010 collections are starting to show up. Yes, I mean Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/New Year’s. THOSE holidays.

Cloud: Holy crap, we’re just starting the fall semester!

Silver lining: Hey, by the time that season actually rolls around, the semester will be over! Wheee!!!

I let the first one or two go by without thinking about it, but now Guerlain, Clinique, Stila, Bobbi Brown, Trish McEvoy, Lancome, Dior, Clarins, Paul & Joe, Givenchy, and elf promo photos are already floating around the web; details will be coming out soon on MAC’s “A Tartan Tale” holiday collection; NARS holiday photos were leaked and quickly pulled … yep, here we go. If you are hoping Santa brings you a red lipstick this year I think you will have to give him a very specific list as it looks like there will be several stunning options from different brands (especially Bobbi Brown, Givenchy, and Clarins). There’s a lot of red and grey/silver in this year’s collections, along with the traditional gold sparkle. Clinique is doing some lovely pinks and browns, which they do very well and which is a nice contrast to the other collections so far. I’m going to wait to post photos until the products are closer to being released, mostly because I feel like we haven’t even really gotten started with fall yet. But if you want to see pics, you just have to go a-Googling and you’ll find some.

Also, dangit. I really want this. From Stila’s holiday 2010 collection:

Sales!

From today through 8/29, The Body Shop is offering 20% off with code FF10. Shipping free with purchases over $50. Apparently 10 out of 10 mermaids surveyed (!) prefer their eco-conscious rainforest hair care. (I don’t write the news, folks, I just report it.)

Boscia is having a Customer Appreciation Week through 9/1: 20% off with code THANKYOU at checkout.

Previously announced sales still in progress:

Stila is still offering 20% off through 8/31 with code DERBYDOLLS • SkinStore is offering 20% off most brands (their usual exclusions apply) through 9/7 with code SUN20

Monday Mix: Surprisingly, Doesn’t Smell Like Cinnamon Rolls; Sales

Because a couple of times a year at Halloween and Comic-Con are evidently not enough: now you can not just look like Princess-Leia-as-Sexy-Slave, but you can smell like her too!

Presenting the (thankfully) limited edition Slave Leia perfume for women, sold exclusively at the online Star Wars Shop (from whence the image at left is taken). According to their copy, this perfume is “More powerful than a thermal detonator yet more comfortable than a metal bikini!”

Uhh, yeah.

Unfortunately, it has notes that really appeal to me: “Fearless and inventive, Slave Leia Perfume includes floral top notes of white peach, lily, bergamot, heliotrope and raspberry that dry down to a warm sultry mix of cashmere woods, musk and night-blooming jasmine.” However, I will of course NOT be buying this product.

Please, please tell me there is a companion Jabba the Hutt scent. I imagine top notes of sweat and bodily secretions over a luminous blend of swamp gas and toe jam, with a solid masculine base of rancid fat and garbage dump.

Sales!

Crap! HauteLook has Stila today and Urban Decay on Wednesday! This is very, very bad for removable wallets everywhere. (They also have Glowology skincare today and Yes to Carrots skincare tomorrow, but fortunately I can resist those as I’m pretty set for skincare.) Sales start at 11 am Eastern/8 am Pacific.

If you’re in the market for some less-spendy items, CherryCulture.com is offering 20% off their assorted less-common drugstore brands through 8/24 with code B2S20. (That stands for Back 2 School, in case any of us need reminding, WHICH WE DON’T, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.)

Thursday Tossup: On the Deflation of Lemmings; Sales

Well, isn’t he a cutie-pie! He seems to be missing his 235897623985 friends, though.

While I was away I had the opportunity to swatch some of the things I’d been seeing around on the web but hadn’t had access to in-person, resulting in the swift (and merciful) release of some lemmings. Here are some things I didn’t buy while away:

Smashbox fall 2010 O-Gloss Noir: I was pretty much slavering over this one until I tested it and saw that it actually comes out of the container black (and yes, I know it has the word “noir” in it, but that’s usually not a literal descriptor for a lip product) and ends up being an utterly unremarkable shade on lips. The best product in the O- line is still the O-Gloss Shimmer, which came in the Smashbox Master’s Class kit. (And I really wish they would fix that. It’s a “master class,” not a “master’s class.”)

• The new Burberry line of cosmetics, available exclusively at Nordstrom’s. I’m not a huge fan of Burberry plaid, but the lipsticks are so cunningly molded that I couldn’t help but be tempted. They didn’t have the whole line out, and I’m sure there are some shades that might still end up calling to me, but I wasn’t as blown away by the products in person as I’d expected to be. This is good, because I hate being forced to buy at a counter with the attendant sales pressure. Eventually I may pick up something out of this line, but it’s not a must-have for me right now.

• As I mentioned on Monday, Stila Custom Color powder blush is another deflated lemming. It’s marketed as another of these “changes-when-it-hits-your-skin-to-be-the-perfect-pink-for-YOU” products, but as far as I can see, it just goes on a nice cool pale pink. Which is fine, and if you are in the market for a nice cool pale pink blush, then go right ahead and pick it up. But I can’t see it doing any serious pH-based magic.

• Chanel Joues Contraste blush in Pink Explosion. The first luxury beauty product I ever bought was a Chanel blush, and in retrospect I think it was the wrong color for me, but ever since then I’ve had a nostalgic little yearning in my heart for another one. Pink Explosion looked great, but when I got my paws on it in-store, I found that it was really hard to pick up any pigment either with a brush or with my fingers, and that what I did pick up had not nearly enough Pink and way too much Explosion (of glitter). That lemming will have to hang on until some other season, I guess. However, lots of other people must be loving it, because I can’t find any link to an online source other than eBay that’s still got it in stock. (It was in stock at all the department store counters I visited, though, so if you are interested I suggest you call your nearest Chanel counter.)

Sales!

Becca is offering 25% off with code DC0810; ending date unknown on this one. Lots of their products are lovely; I’ve got a cream blush coming up for review in September or early October (it’s a fall shade so I’ve not done much more than test it at present).

Meow Cosmetics (an indie mineral makeup company) is offering 25% off with code PARTYON. Shipping is free over $60. Also no known end date for this one at the moment.

Philosophy is offering 15% off skincare through Friday 8/20 with code GREATSKIN.

Beauty360 (CVS’s niche/prestige cosmetics & skincare arm) is offering 20% off your Beauty360 or CVS online order with code SIZZLE. Again, no ending date known (but I’m guessing 8/31 for most of these at the latest).

Juara is offering 20% off through 8/31 with code SECRET20.

And for all of you MAC fans, the Fabulous Felines collection is set to release next Thursday, 8/26. Often products go up on the website a day or two before, so you might want to be looking out on Tuesday or Wednesday if you’ve got your eye on something you think is going to cause a flashmob (Stereo Rose, I’m looking at you).

Monday Mix: Back-to-School Consolation Prizes? Also, Sales

I can’t deny it any longer, much as I’d like to – it’s back-to-school time. Anyone picking themselves up a cosmetics/skincare consolation prize to make the transition a little easier? A new concealer for that 8 am class? New nail polish to appreciate while you’re writing comments on student papers?

Personally, after my recent binge, I am not allowed to do any serious shopping for quite some time, so I’ll rely on living vicariously through your stories. But I have a mess of new products to be playing around with, so that should cushion the rude crash of the fall semester falling on my head.

Sales!

It seems to be skincare week over at HauteLook — they have Organicare Skincare on Monday 8/16, Kate Somerville on Tuesday 8/17 (so if you’re interested in Exfolikate or any of her other products, this might be a good time to check them out), Actifirm Skincare on Wednesday 8/18, Moy Skincare on Thursday 8/19, and Dr. Schwab Skincare on Friday 8/20. All sales begin at 11 am Eastern/8 am Pacific.

A reminder that Stila‘s sale is still running on their website through 8/31 with code DERBYDOLLS: 20% off, free shipping over $50. (FYI, if you’re lemming their new Custom Color Blush, another product that supposedly reacts to your skin’s pH to create “your perfect pink,” I swatched it in-store and it ain’t all that. It’s a very pretty pale and cool pink, but it’s not going to change to a deep magenta on your skin or anything. It’s going to be a pale and cool pink. That being said, if you need a cool pale pink blush, go for it.)

Monday Mix: LUSH Lovely Jubblies (Yes, It’s What You Think); Sales

You knew it was coming, right? It’s been awhile since we’ve had a post about how we can all become more boobalicious. Never fear, LUSH is here, with their new Lovely Jubblies breast cream.

[Bullwinkle: "Hey, Rocky! Watch me pull a rabbit out of this hat!" Rocky: "Again?"]

Yes, it’s another Magic Breast Cream. And in case you are wondering exactly how far LUSH is going to go with the descriptions (and you are, you know you are), allow me to share the details from the website.

Keep your knockers in tit top shape

Dirty pillows feeling too cushy?

Introducing our brilliant breast cream, packed full of tightening meadowsweet infusion and firming tiger lily petals to help your girls fight the forces of gravity. We add heaps of beeswax and organic oils like almond and avocado to soften your melons (and to make it even harder to keep the boys at bay!) We think everyone deserves a pair of lovely jubblies.

Irresistible, Floral Fragrance

Smooth a generous amount of Lovely Jubblies over your décolletage area to tone down the wiggle and leave your cleavage smelling like a fresh floral bouquet of orange blossom, rose, jasmine and ylang ylang.

Tiger Lily Petals

Tiger lilies have astringent properties and are traditionally used to tighten the skin, making them perfect for firming up wobbly bits.

Fresh Rose Infusion

Rose is brilliant at soothing and gently toning the delicate skin of your décolletage area, leaving it with a fresh, floral fragrance.

First, I call bullshit. Second, eeew. Third, just in case you haven’t had enough, LUSH’s 2010 summer issue of LUSH TIMES (their quarterly catalog) features a contest to win a $500 LUSH gift card — and all you have to do is tell them what you call your “jubblies” and why. Oh, and you have to include a photo. It doesn’t say whether it has to include your jubblies. It actually doesn’t even say that it has to include your face. Maybe it is supposed to be a jubblies-only shot.

In case you want to purchase this concoction, it retails for $24.95 at LUSH stores and online.

Sales!

OK, I missed announcing the Tarte F&F sale, which is 40% off with code FFAUG, and which ends today. Sorry, ladies. However — as usual, Tarte’s website is so sold out that there’s really no point in going over to have a peek.

HauteLook has Mario Badescu today and Blinc tomorrow. All sales start at 11 am Eastern/8 am Pacific.

Sales Quickie: Sephora VIB Weekend

Hey there!

If you’re a Sephora VIB, you may have gotten an email about this already, but just in case:

This weekend, 8/6-8/8, is Sephora VIB appreciation weekend! Whoo-hoo! If you shop in-store or online this weekend (online code: VIBLOVE, don’t go there) you’ll snag a special VIB “Swag Bag” with 7 samples that are normally at the 100-point BI level, plus two pieces of flair buttons (seriously, Sephora? Why?). Free with any merchandise purchase.

Possibly even more exciting, you’ll get 2-for-1 BI points.

Am I shopping at Sephora this weekend? You bet your sweet patootie.

Thursday Tossup: Updates, Sales

Miscellaneous updates:

• My Caboodles train case is, as I feared, just too-big enough to be annoying for travel. Drat.

• And yet, the Naked palette still doesn’t really fit in it.

• Bobbi Brown Treatment Lip Shine SPF 15 in Raspberry Pink: still missing. However —

• Lancome Rouge Magnificence lip gloss: still sitting calmly in drawer. So I’m one for two on missing lipcolors.

• Number of CVS stores visited over the past two months in hopes of scoring limited edition Milani Liquid Metal collection nail polish: 15.

• Number of cities in which CVS stores in question were located: 2.

• Number of bottles of nail polish successfully found: 0.

• Percent certain I am that the whole Milani thing was a hoax and never really existed: 67.

Sales!

A couple new ones, but nothing very exciting at the moment — it’s those end-of-July doldrums.

SkinStore has 20% off almost everything (some exclusions, as always) through 8/2 with code FAIR20.

Rock & Republic is offering 50% off cosmetics with code ROCKCOSMETICS. I haven’t got a closing date on that one.

ULTA is having a 20%-off-entire-purchase sale (coupon code 51194) through 7/31, but there seems to be some confusion about what’s excluded. Normally this is one of their fabulous good-on-everything-including-prestige-brands coupons, but online at least they are excluding the prestige brands. I haven’t taken my printed coupon to the store yet, so I will try to find that out when I go.

HauteLook has Biotherm and Skin by Alison Raffaele starting today at 11 am Eastern/8 am Pacific.

Previously announced sales still in progress:

Stila is offering 20% off through 8/31 with code DERBYDOLLS • Vincent Longo has 25% off with code SUMRX (exact expiration date unknown but probably 7/31) • Aromaleigh has 35% off with code ADIEU35 at least through 8/10 and probably until they are sold out • BeautyHabit is offering 25% off through 8/13 with code OPRAH • NARS is offering 18% off on orders of $60 or more with code 071510CP3; ending date unknown.

Image via Bluntcard, which I love. They’re like Anne Taintor, but snarkier!
